VMware [Mar. 3rd, 2006|07:01 am]
Well, right now I am in a love-hate relationship with VMware. For those of you who do not know, we purchased a new server and have installed VMware on it, which is basically a "Virtual Machine" platform where we can run multiple copies of Debian (which uses the Memory and CPU better). Yesterday one of the virtual drives decided that it did not like MySQL and nuked itself (the data was ok, but the server software itself destroyed itself). This morning I woke up and discovered that some time during the night VMware decided that it wanted another Serial Key as we are using 2 processors per VM instance...

I love VMware, but little things like this are just annoying the heck out of me.

Alright, back to work... Think we need spell check? I'll install it if you guys want it?

This post is being made from the new web server (Jesus) which is sitting in my living room right now, while the DB server is about 10 KM away.

Have I ever said how much I love technology? :D

Progress [Sep. 21st, 2005|08:27 am]
Hey Y'all!
I must say, last few days have been amazing as far as progress goes!! [info]remark has made some really good progress developing the various tools needed to bring this site on a public level, and I know [info]evan had been implementing some redundancy behind the scenes. It's kind of cool looking back, fresh off the install, thinking "Oh man, this looks a lot more complicated than I thought". But, last few days I have been looking at the things other people have done, and more and more I observe myself saying "Well I'll be damned, that's totally cool!".

There have been a number of LiveJournal Staff members, and Support Administrators that have helped us out, and my gratitude goes out to them as well! My goal is to not create competition between the 2 sites, but rather have an option available.

As I said in one of my earlier posts, being able to scale the site to possible demands will be a challenge. If [info]evan reads this, we need to start looking into Load Balancers, and if any software ones exist on the net (I think Danga has one: Perlbal.. that's an option).

Anyways, I need to head to my 'real' job :). Take care guys, and keep up the amazing work. Keep in mind that if this does take off. we will all see the benifits, plus the personal gratification knowing we've created something really cool :D

Note to self:
Any future servers must be able to start on their own, without a keyboard attached :/
